New List selection and search controls

To take advantage of NameStation’s most powerful domain search tools, it’s important to know, which keyword lists to use. There are over 170 preset lists that can be combined and merged, so a more efficient way of selecting and finding the right ones was needed. Today, the new searching and browsing controls have now been completed and awaiting your feedback.

First click opens up the list browser. For new users, this is a good way to start exploring, which lists we have. Clicking on any list performs a search with it. The Keyword List dropdown also functions as a search field.

Just start typing the List name, contest name, or any keyword and it will instantly display all Lists (including Contest Lists and Custom Lists) containing the search term.

What do you think – do they make finding the relevant lists easier, is there room for improvement?

Business Name Generator Lists

We’ve added two new lists for generating business names:

  • Business Name Prefixes – containing words commonly used in compound business names, such as Archer, Pathway, Allied, Union, Imperial, Redwood, Open, Epic, Icon, Venture.
  • Business Name Suffixes – words associated with different trades, consulting, management, services.

Just a few minutes experimenting with those lists has already revealed promising results. All these domains are currently available:

  • BasicFinancing.com
  • FairwestUnion.com
  • CondorExports.com
  • RedstarSecurities.com
  • UnionEstates.com
  • CrossroadCommerce.com
  • EverbrightExpert.com
  • HorizonSciences.com

.COM.AU, .FR, .CO.NZ domain extensions added

NameStation’s domain name generators now support a total of 67 domain extensions. Today’s additions include:

Contest Points Tab

In the past few days, you may have noticed a few discrepancies occurring in the Talent Points calculations. We were working on a more reliable way to tally Points – and the new system has now been deployed.  If you should notice any missing points (hopefully this is very unlikely now), we can add them retroactively.

On every Contest page, there is now a new Points tab, where you can keep track of the awarded and remaining Points for that Contest.

Domain search forms layout. Menu changes

Today we released a number of layout changes to our search forms, hopefully making them easier to understand and use. As with all new things, there may be some glitches here and there. What do you think, is there anything we could improve?

There were also a couple of changes in the menu structure. The Variations search form no longer exists, because the Variations search results are now displayed when using the Quick Search box in the header. With a single keyword, we’re adding a number of popular affixes and TLDs. With more keywords, we’re showing different combinations, singular and plural forms.

The Hand-picked domains page is now in the Keyword Domains section.

Overlaps and Alliterations now in Keyword Domains

Overlaps and Alliterations are now part of Keyword Domains search, instead of Dictionary Domains.

Header redesign, search improvements

We just launched a couple of UI improvements.

The topmost search box now stays put, when you scroll down the page. This is especially useful in long domain search results pages. If you get an idea for a name, you can quickly check exact match domains without having to scroll back to top.

The quick search box is visible on all pages. If the search term is a dictionary word, we’ll bring up the definition, related words and the Lists where this word occurs. All those links lead to new searches.  If the term is not a dictionary word, then we’ll simply show more alternative variations.

Header navigation has changed as well, a few more menu items that lead to pages that previously may have been difficult to find.

Share your thoughts – what do you think of these changes, would you like to see anything added or removed?

Quick Search now has keyword information

Typing a keyword into the Quick Search box now returns the keyword definition, related words and all Lists, where this keyword occurs.

Rich formatting in Contest Discussion

Contest Discussion now has formatting controls that allow links and basic HTML. This way, we can better share search techniques during the contest.

Downvoted entries can be removed again

We have re-enabled the deletion of down-voted entries.

A while ago we had disabled this, because we received a complaints from Contest Holders about down-voting being meaningless and a high number of irrelevant entries. There is a delicate balance to keeping both sides of the Contest happy, so we have to experiment with different ways to do it fairly.

By introducing the Up/Down ratio to contestant profiles, we’ve created an additional incentive to focus on the quality of entries, rather than quantity. There is now also a flagging system, which will be tied to Points soon. A very limited number of entries has been flagged so far, and for objective reasons.

Although down-votes no longer affect your immediate earnings (since you can remove the negative Points), it is still better to keep the Up/Down ratio as good as possible.   In the future, we may create new Premium contest types, where more Points are distributed. Such Premium Contests may require a certain average ratio to enter the contest.

People may also wish to contact you directly (we’ll add a messaging feature soon), and they may look at your profile stats to make a decision.

Good luck with your domain search!
